Samsun Avdan Landfill Site Visitor Center

Avdan - Samsun

The visitor centre is located on the site of one of Turkey’s few environmental friendly landfills, on a hill a few kilometers outside the city of Samsun on the Black Sea coast. It is designed to serve as a space for education and presentation to the frequent visitor groups interested in this model project.

The elevated position on the site was utilized to create a wide view angle overlooking the landfill with its different facilities as well as the city. This axis also formed the pointed shape of the building, contrasting with the existing structures and natural environment around it. Raw concrete and large glass surfaces give an overall industrial appearance whereas recycled materials are chosen to highlight its function. Besides the main exhibition space a small kitchen as well as an attached auditorium outside and the accessible roof complete the buildings program.
