MvNTE - Traditional House in the Southern Aegean
Bozalan Village - Gökova
This stone house built in the mountain village at bay of Gökova, was designed to demonstrate the disappearing local dwelling culture of the region. Construction of the house utilized traditional building materials and techniques. The architectural design was completed after regional houses were studied on site and from various books. Widths and heights of stone walls, unit sizes, floor spans and roof structures were derived from examples. The house was eventually constructed by local artisans.
Nevertheless, a modern kitchen was planned in the single story room on the ground floor and a modern shower was located on the second floor. The transfer of the cooking and bathing functions traditionally located outside the house, into the building is a variation for the typology. The two story house with a total of 67 m² usable area has a semi open room on the second floor, traditionally called ‘hayat’ which in turn gives access to two rooms.
