Çınaraltı and Küllük Street Cafes
Beyazıt Square - İstanbul
Çınaraltı and Küllük, the two street cafes at Beyazıt Square, have disappeared over time, however the experience of sitting in the presence of monuments and in the shade of centuries-old trees continues to exist in the collective memory of the public open space. When Beyazıt Square and its surroundings were the subject of a comprehensive urban design project, we envisaged the re-establishment of these two legendary coffee houses and naming them as Çınaraltı and Küllük with reference to history. The architectural design of the coffeehouses - by examining the experience in daily life and cultural practices identified with the history of Beyazıt Square - was carried out with an authentic modern structure that can establish a dialogue with monuments and urban open space, while also fulfilling the technical requirements of a contemporary street cafe. The project and construction processes were implemented within the scope of Beyazıt Square Urban Design Project prepared by UrbAr Urbanization and Architecture Office, with the approval of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Board of Istanbul.
