Port of Izmir Urban Design Competition

Gulf of Izmir

The relocation of the industries and port facilities from the waterfront in the near future will result in the opening of an area equal in size to the current city center. The objective of the competition is to ensure that urban development in the area will be pursued according to an urban plan. The competition focuses on different aspects of urban development such as the contact with the waterfront, the continuity of the city center and the preservation of registered historic buildings from early industrial period.

The project proposes new arterial roads, originating from the center and crossing the area parallel to the port as well as pedestrian axis perpendicular to the waterfront. The waterfront district is redefined by mixed uses; shopping, cultural and entertainment areas. A new residential district is also proposed on the waterfront.
