Harvard University Graduate School of Design
The thesis is concerned with Metropolitan Istanbul where constellation of urban centers, settlement areas, satellite towns, industries, port areas or airports as well as open areas or natural preserves define a continuous metropolitan topography; generating an understanding of the dynamics of urban development in the Greater Metropolitan Area of Istanbul, and Beykoz - Ümraniye area is the focus of the study.
Beykoz - Ümraniye area, on the Anatolian side, is a condition between urban expansion and dense woodlands and the Elmalı Reservoir. The area is becoming urban rapidly, posing serious problems. The essence of this thesis is a project that avoids any deterministic approach, but has its basis in urbanism as a strategy that will impact the environment.
