Alaçatı Windmills Square Urban Design
Alaçatı - İzmir
The Windmills Square is a large-scale urban design and landscaping project. The project aims to reconsider the relationship between the historic town fabric and the hilltop accommodating ancient windmills – once just outside the town center, in time came to be an extension of it when a new highway connection was built allowing vehicular traffic access to the town from this point. In-between the ancient windmills and the town center – an architecturally undefined site, came to be populated by a junkyard, shanty construction accommodating small shops, ATM machines as well as irregular car parking. The first phase transforms this in-between site into a new gate to the town.
UrbAr’s proposal for the project outlines an urban extension scheme based on developing a pedestrian promenade and starting a network of small urban squares, keeping up with the rural character of the town of Alaçatı. The whole project area covering 3,5 hectares will be completed in three successive phases.
