Soldiers Square Pedestrianization
Çeşme, İzmir
The center of the town of Çeşme is overwhelmed by uncontrolled car traffic that blocks pedestrian circulation. and furthermore cafes and restaurants are not able to utilize the outdoor spaces so favorable to public life. The pedestrianization project is developed as a priority tool to make space for pedestrians to walk to the market given that shops, cafes and restaurants that can be used in the outdoors.
Pedestrianization of Çeşme town center involves renovation of ground floor covering, and eradicating unnecessary level differences to make the area accessible to all users. The project is developed with the "shared urban space" concept where priority is given to pedestrians over vehicles. A new geometric pattern that resolves the differences in ground levels in the Soldiers Square was the starting point for the design. Geometric patterns are further developed with varying materials, surface treatments and textures that aim to capture the reflections of light with varying qualities that will enhance the perception of depth and the visual experience of the users.
