Alaçatı Surfing Beaches

Alaçatı - İzmir

The bay of Alaçatı with strong meltami winds, a year round locale for surfers, beginners or professionals, hosts the PWA cup. The public beach however, has been occupied over the years, haphazardly by the surf schools with a patchwork of activities, without much concern for the deteriorating effects on the environment. The project introduces a public promenade parallel to the beach, making accessible the existing zones of activity areas while at the same time introducing an initiative for better management of the public beach. Furthermore the points of entry to the beach are designed so as to provide orientation. The project also foresees protection of existing vegetation.

The promenade is designed in the form of a boardwalk with the introduction of amenities placed at regular intervals. Large open areas are designated for drying of sails and resting, as well for festivals. The steep slope on the southern tip of the bay which has been ravaged, will be terraced and re-planted for informal gatherings and sun bathing as well as for tournament watching.
